ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

This writing workshop, grounded in the Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA) method, invites participants to explore the psycho-spiritual opportunities that emerge in the later stages of life. In a culture that idealizes youth, we find ourselves in a time and place where the voices and wisdom of elders are more essential than ever.

Aging offers a unique developmental path—a chance for deep reflection, transformation, and surprise. This workshop creates a safe, structured space to engage that journey through writing.

Each two-hour session will be facilitated by an AWA-trained leader and will include two writing prompts. The AWA approach will be introduced and practiced, offering a supportive environment where all writing is treated as worthy and confidential. This is not a class on the craft of writing—it is an invitation to write as a form of expression. If you can speak, you can write.

Writing prompts will center around the rich terrain of aging and will draw from sources such as The Inner Work of Age: Shifting from Role to Soul by Connie Zweig and Writing Alone and With Others by Pat Schneider.

Come and surprise yourself. The later years can be a time of profound creativity and insight—this workshop is a place to begin.

Susan Flynn has practiced as a clinical psychologist in private practice for 45 years, is a poet, and a trained facilitator in the AWA approach to writing. Her clinical experience, both as a client and a provider, has convinced her of the importance of including the body in any kind of healing. Susan considers her writing as part of a spiritual practice, and it is with that intention she offers this workshop.
