Spirit in the Arts

Come Celebrate Art with Spirit!
Summer Schedule Changed!
Open Studio hours changed for July only.
Because of the heat, more artists want to come in earlier, and don’t want to stay as late in the afternoon. But some artists can only come in the afternoon, so we are open one day with later hours. We want to accommodate everyone! Therefore, the hours for the month of JULY ONLY will be as follows:
July Hours:
Monday, Wednesday & Thursday 10:00am – 3:00pm
Tuesday 12 noon – 6:00pm
Still closed Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays
Open Studio closed during the month of August!
The Spirit in the Arts open studio will be closed during the month of August to allow the staff time to reorganize and rejuvenate. If you have art in progress in the studio, we ask you to pick it up before the end of July. We will reopen with our regular hours after Labor Day:
Closed August 1 – September 7, 2009. We will reopen on Tuesday September 8th at 12 noon – 6:00pm.
Check out Spirit Print for your printing needs!
Spirit in the Arts Gallery Hosts New Show! |
 |
Look for a new group show in our art gallery starting the 13th of July. We will be showing art from the year-long Wednesday night women’s art group whose theme this year was Sharing & Creating Art Restores the Soul ~ SCARS. These amazing artists fearlessly explored scars of their lives through different media, and the show reflects their strength and vulnerability. |
Stop by the gallery to see just a few of these unique pieces of art. The show will be in the gallery through September. |

2009 RACE FOR THE ARTS
The 11th Annual 5K run/walk benefiting arts programs will be held this year on Friday August 28th starting at 6:00pm. Join the fun and collect pledges for this easy race. |
100% of the proceeds will benefit Spirit in the Arts if you race/walk in our name. This year the walk will be held at a new location: William Land Park, Sutterville Road & Freeport Blvd, Sacramento. Entry fee: $25 if postmarked on or before August 17 (kids $12), $30 if postmarked on or after August 18. Includes tee shirt & refreshments. Entry forms are available at Spirit in the Arts. |
We Are Growing! Ground Floor Spirit is on its way!
Starting on April 13th, our expansion into a more spacious area is going to be a reality. We are calling it Ground Floor Spirit because we will offer open studio space downstairs, as well as in our upstairs studios. Our hosts at the United Methodist Church have graciously agreed to allow us the use of their large social hall to expand our offerings. During our regular open studio hours (Mon, Tue, Thurs, 12 – 6, Wed 10 – 3) participants will have the choice of working upstairs or downstairs (except on the occasional day when the church has particular downstairs programs). Art materials, table space and an experienced artist will be available downstairs once Ground Floor Spirit is launched. Tom Weideman, artist and teacher extraordinaire, will be the host of the downstairs program. In addition to being available for questions and concerns, he will also introduce various art projects. Each week he will teach those who are interested some of the particulars of screen printing, mono prints, making paper, book binding and other crafts.
So come to see us after April 13th in our new downstairs studios. If you’ve wanted to visit, but couldn’t face the stairs, or if you know of someone who would enjoy joining our community of creative spirits, pass the word that we are now more accessible than ever. You can work upstairs or down – the choice is yours! We’d love to see you here!

Current Classes!
The Spirit in the Arts is a program of Bread of Life, located in the upstairs rooms of the North Sacramento United Methodist Church, 650 El Camino Avenue, in Sacramento. With open studio spaces and small rooms for spiritual direction, this special place is available to all who want to explore new facets of themselves, others, and their spiritual resources through creative expression and conversation.
Our emphasis on Spirit is broad and inclusive. While the founders come from Christian traditions, all are welcome here. The only expressions not welcome are those that harm or diminish: A core value is treating each other as people of sacred worth and value while celebrating diversity.
Creative expressions welcomed here include, but are not limited to, visual arts, cooking, gardening, storytelling, writing, drama and music.
Everyone – from the most tentative first-time explorer to the accomplished artist – is encouraged to participate. Art materials are available at no charge to those who cannot afford to buy them.
Spirit in the Arts is housed in the upstairs rooms above the church in a neighborhood deeply affected by poverty and cultural barriers. The Spirit in the Arts brings to this area the hope that true community connections will be fostered through this universal “language” of creative expression.

Genuine spirituality, like art, is open and dynamic...both are the hope of a world so badly in need of transformation.
