Spirit in the Arts is located in Sacramento California, USA. A program of the non-profit spiritual formation center Bread of Life, we have been providing free and low-cost creative experiences for over four years to people from all walks of life. We are a unique arts program in that we strive to provide a safe, welcoming place for individuals to express themselves through creativity and community, without fear of censure. Everyone is creative, in their own unique way, no matter their skill or ability. We believe that heartfelt creative expression is a wonderful way to access spiritual connections, learn about ourselves, build bridges through community and make strides in healing life's wounds.

We welcome everyone to join us: those who believe in specific religious traditions, and those who question anything spiritual; those who are familiar with artistic techniques, and those who have never created before; those who long to explore their inner territory, and those who simply want to relax - Spirit in the Arts is open to all!

We invite you to visit our upstairs art rooms and gallery. Come and feel the energy when people are engaged in self-expression in a community setting - something special happens that is greater than the individuals themselves. Sit and converse with people you might not otherwise meet - play with art materials that may challenge you or delight you - allow yourself the time and space to consciously pursue your inner spirit, in whatever form that may take. Our doors are open, our materials are usually free and we long to get to know you!

A Crucible of Diversity: Spirit in the Arts!

Stop by to see the current art show at Spirit in the Arts!

We are showing art from the year-long Wednesday night women’s art group whose theme this year was Sharing & Creating Art Restores the Soul ~ SCARS. These amazing artists fearlessly explored scars of their lives through different media, and the show reflects their strength and vulnerability. Stop by the gallery to see just a few of these unique pieces of art. The show is in the upstairs gallery.

Ground Floor Spirit is Open!

Our expansion into a more spacious area is finally a reality. We now have open studio space downstairs, as well as in our upstairs studio. We call it Ground Floor Spirit. Our hosts at the United Methodist Church have graciously agreed to allow us the use of their large social hall to expand our offerings. During our regular open studio hours (Mon, Tue, Thurs, 12 – 6, Wed 10 – 3) participants will have the choice of working upstairs or downstairs (except on the occasional day when the church has particular downstairs programs). If you’ve wanted to visit, but couldn’t face the stairs, or if you know of someone who would enjoy joining our community of creative spirits, pass the word that we are now more accessible than ever. You can work upstairs or down – the choice is yours! We’d love to see you here!

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many opportunities for you to volunteer at Spirit in the Arts. Join our community of friendly folks by volunteering when you can for even a small project or by coming in on a regular basis. We want to make your volunteer experience a good one – we’ll meet with you to figure the best match of your desires and skills to our needs. We have a list of possible jobs, but maybe you’d like to create a new program, class or project that we don’t currently offer. Maybe you can show us how your skills will benefit our non-profit organization. We would love to discuss the possibilities!

We welcome volunteers of all ages! We are an excellent site for youth to complete the community service hours that are often required in many schools. We encourage adult seniors to join our volunteer team because of their vast life experiences and skills. We also welcome those with physical limitations – we’ll find a place for everyone! So call us now to set up a time to meet. We need you to keep our program running!

Summer Youth Camp

Our first summer youth camp was planned around the theme Celebrating Our Diversity and was dedicated to a myriad of art experiences designed to expose youth to different cultures. See Spirit in the Arts Summer Youth Camp July 2008 for details. Summer 2009 we continued the well-received youth experience with a second art camp, Celebrating our Diversity through Multicultural Art and Story. We already look forward to summer 2010.

Genuine spirituality, like art, is open and dynamic...both are the hope of a world so badly in need of transformation.
